Chambers DesLauriers Our Time To Ride

By Brian Rock

Chambers DesLauriers combine rock and soul and a dash of romance on their sophomore album, Our Time To Ride. Like fellow soul revivalists, The War & Treaty, Chambers DesLauriers are a married duo with powerful vocals and energetic arrangements. Annika Chambers handles the bulk of the vocals with a gospel infused intensity honed by years of testifying for her Southern Baptist church. Paul DesLauriers provides the flaming fretwork on lead guitar. Together, they deliver a musical marriage of blues, soul, and rock that is at turns gritty then graceful, but always inspiring.

“In The Heart of The Night,” is a rollicking invitation to enjoy life to the fullest. A bouncing bass line and barrel house piano prep the party as Chambers invites you to, “tap your feet to this Southern tune.” Singing a hymn to the healing power of music, she continues, “Music is our refuge, let the Spirit soar. Open the windows and get down on the floor.” DesLauriers adds an exclamation point with a scorching blues/rock guitar solo to shake the rafters. Like an altar call at church, Chambers DesLauriers invite you to, “Get baptized by the boogie,” and enjoy the gifts of God’s creation to the fullest.

The gritty blues of, “Sing,” also celebrates the power of music with a haunting gospel chorus. “People Gonna Talk,” is a Memphis blues invitation to live your life on your own terms, punctuated by Hammond organ, a blaring horn section, and a Christoher Walken approved amount of cowbell. “Written In The Stars,” is a soulful, organ-infused declaration of love. The love fest continues on the swampy blues of, “Love You Just The Same.” “Our Time To Ride,” is a blues rock synergy that shows what two people can accomplish when they work together. The band adds some Sly Stone style funk to the sizzling, “Temperature of One O Nine.” Slowing the pace, Chambers coos a slow-burning love letter in, “Believe In Love.” “One In A Million,” is a tender duet that expresses the awe and gratitude of finally finding your soul mate. Unashamed to declare their love for one another in the most public of expressions, Chambers DesLauriers inspires us to open our hearts to the love all around us.

Brian Rock

Brian was raised gypsy style, moving every other year until well after college. As friendships proved to be temporary, Brian found a constant companion in music, wearing the grooves off Beatles and Dylan albums before moving on to Lyle Lovett and Dwight Yokam. Living so often in flux, he has come to value music and lyrics of lasting quality. Not moved by trends or fashion, he is drawn to timeless lyrics and soulful rhythms. Although now settled down, Brian still expresses his gypsy spirit through his writing. He has co-written songs with musician friends he’s met along the way, including several contributions to the 2012 ICMA Album of the Year, Family Album. Brian also writes children’s books and poems, including the Children’s Book Council featured title, The Deductive Detective.
