The Felice Brothers: Yonder is the Clock

The Felice Brothers are self-taught. From upstate New York, they moved to Brooklyn and began playing at the 42nd street subway station. They would eventually go on to play festivals all over the country and even wind up at Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble in Woodstock. Pretty cool.

Their folksy sound is reminiscent of John Prine crossed with Blood on the Track era Dylan with a slight hint of Zydeco. Not a bad combination.

Yonder Is The Clock is a decent album. It is lyrically strong and story oriented. Musically, it has quite a few lulls which at times work, but wind up a bit repetitive and tiresome. They seem to do better with more uptempo tracks, as the mellower tunes lack any particular distinction.

What is interesting about The Felice Brothers, is that they’re New Yorkers playing roots music and they very often pay homage to their Nor-Eastern upbringing with tracks like “Cooperstown “ and “Penn Station” which can be heard here.
