East Nashville Roots Musician, Amelia White and her Los Angeles Record Release Party

“I have a heart-shaped rock from the Buffalo River in Tennessee that I always carry for good luck- and Billy Holiday is singing to me today.”

This is what Nashville artist, Amelia White tells me when I ask her what she always takes on the road with her and what kind of driving music she listens to, while touring. I briefly got to speak with White in Austin, Texas during the week of SXSW, where she and fellow roots musician, Anne McCue had formed a temporary duo and were playing several gigs around town before heading off to New Orleans.

AmeliaWhiteOldPostcardcover300dpi640x574White is in the middle of a lengthy tour in support of her new album, Old Postcard. The record has the Americana world sitting up and taking notice of this music veteran and accomplished artist. Amelia White is often compared to Lucinda Williams, which is a comparison that seems to be thrown at many throaty-voiced women in the genre. While her voice is husky, and she has a definitive knack for storytelling, White has a distinct pitch and intensity to her sound.

On her blog, White describes Old Postcard as “a collection of songs that encompass the meaning of home to me from many different angles, and characters.” The 11-song CD has a beautifully lush production thanks to the Grammy winning engineer, Mike Poole (Patty Griffin’s Downtown Church) who also mixed White’s last album. The cast of characters playing and singing on the record is too lengthy to list here, but includes Nashville residents, Jon Byrd, Sergio Webb, Anne McCue and recent transplant from CA, Julie Christensen.

Amelia White will be hitting Los Angeles, for a record release party on Friday, March 21st at Hotel Cafe. Showtime is 8:30 and cost is $10. Popular Los Angeles Alt-Country gals, Calico the Band are supporting. 1623 N Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028 for tickets: www.hotelcafe.com/tickets/
