TJ WEST: SAN FRANCISCO ARTIST, JORDANNAH ELIZABETH TO RELEASE A RUSH
By Kim Grant
A Rush was produced by Breck Omar Brunson (Apes) and Steve Kille (Dead Meadow). The record is more experimental in nature than Elizabeth’s first release, Bring to the Table and combines psych rock, country and soul music while highlighting the singer’s “throaty, gospel-drenched vocals” or as Elizabeth likes to describe it, “It’s like Nina Simone on LSD.”
The record kicks off with the song “Unwind” a lo-fi French slow jam. Elizabeth notes, “The song was freestyled—I imagined a story of being in a relationship with a wealthy, yet awful French lover and sitting on the edge of the bed, ready to leave him.” “A Prayer for Black America” is a civil rights song written and dedicated to Trayvon Martin and others who were shot and killed in front of the world. Elizabeth told The Bay Bridged, “I wanted to let people know that I’m here, and I get it and I’m praying for us.”
The title track, “A Rush” was remixed by Breck Brunson. Steve Kille recorded the original version version of the song in Los Angeles. “I heard his beats and just put the lyrics over his music,” said Elizabeth. “Life is FUN” is a hooky tune that incorporates chirping birds and is just—well—fun. “Stop Breaking” is a ballad featuring Matt Fowle and “14 Minus 13” is another collaboration with Matt Fowle. “Baltimore” is a cover of Nina Simone and is homage to the singer and to Elizabeth’s hometown.
