TJ Artist Profile: NOCONA

HOME: Venice, CA

PROFESSION: Song Slinger and Guitar Fighter at NOCONA

HOBBIES: Astronomy, Particle Physics and Salsa making

LAST ALBUM PURCHASED: Ronnie Self, Mr Frantic, Norton Records

LAST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Getting to open for Roky Erickson and The Hounds of The Baskervilles in Austin last year was a big deal for us. His music has been more important to me than Jesus over the years.

I also made a pitcher of margaritas for Adrienne from the Mexican limes in my backyard last weekend.

QUOTE: “1. Get the money, 2. Always remember to get the money. 3. Never forget to always remember to get the money.” Shep Gordon

CRAZIEST ROAD MEMORY: I can’t really remember all the details but there have been some pretty wild nights at The Philosopher’s Club in SF. They’ve involved a heavy amount of organ meats, rich cheeses, harmonica, Heidegger, Nietzsche and Chinese parlor tricks. I have tasted animal flesh and I have lived to tell the tale.

FAVORITE BEER: Currently, Pearl Snap, Austin Beer Works

WHO’S THE ULTIMATE COUNTRY PIMP:  Pee Wee Haralson or Daddy Pete Fenoglio, it’s a toss up (Great Uncles).

FAVORITE LA AMERICANA SITE: (TJ) Because ya’ll don’t suck up to the shitty venal necrotic pop country music industry and it’s demonic gremlins and minions of thought control.

NoconaPROFILE:
NOCONA sound like a howling train whistle echoing in the night, with catchy guitar riff driven songs and a high-energy rhythm section.  It’s not country, it’s not punk, it’s a finely blended “americana rock” style that is rarely duplicated, recalling elements of Bob Dylan, The White Stripes, early punk rock and outlaw country at once.

This husband and wife duo core surrounded by driving drums and screaming harp playing brings their anticipated follow up to 2013’s Nocona, Long Gone Song, is brimming with songs one will have stuck on repeat. Having played at Outside Lands, Bonnaroo, and Stagecoach, Nocona have been all over lately, as ”Beelzebub is Still the King,” a song from “Long Gone Song” was recently featured on the TV show, “Bones.”
